Exchange Scholar J1 / J2
(Insurance to fulfil consular requirement for J1 and J2 visa holders)
The US State Department has specific requirements in insurance coverage for visiting research scholars on J1 (Exchange Scholar) visas. The same requirements extend to their dependents on J2 visas. Many student medical insurance plans can be purchased by the J1 scholar even though they are not students nor enrolled in courses. As visiting scholars, you have many options for your insurance coverage. Be sure to compare benefits to get the coverage you want while you are staying in the US!
Eligibility:
- Most policies require the J1 visa holder to be the primary insured.
- One policy allows for the J2 visa holder to be the primary insured (Patriot Exchange) as long as the J1 visa holder is already covered by insurance from the host institution.
- If your institution requires a signed document, please contact us ahead of time so we can be sure the company will be willing to sign your form.
